Grants, scholarships, state benefits and education loans

Funding falls into different categories: VA education benefits, non-repayable grants, scholarships, state tuition waivers, student employment and repayable student loans. A service-connected rating may unlock certain programs, but there is no universal federal college grant automatically awarded to every disabled veteran or dependent.

VA · Rogers STEM Scholarship

For qualifying Post-9/11 GI Bill users and Fry Scholars in approved STEM pathways; up to nine months or $30,000 of added benefit, whichever comes first, subject to program rules.

Apply · VA Form 22-10203 ↗

VA · Yellow Ribbon

School and VA cost-sharing for approved extra tuition and fees—not a general cash grant; participating schools and eligibility restrictions apply.

Federal · Pell Grant and campus aid

Complete FAFSA to evaluate need-based grants, work-study, and applicable state/school awards. Pell is not restricted to veterans; eligibility depends on student and program factors.

State and institution tuition assistance

Veteran and dependent benefits vary widely by state, service history, residency, rating and school. Check state veterans agencies and university financial-aid offices; don't assume 100% P&T alone qualifies.

Federal student loans · optional

Direct federal student loans are repayable debt, unlike grants and many VA benefits. Review rates, terms, and eligibility through Federal Student Aid. Loans are not required to apply for grants.

Funding order: Check VA program eligibility, file FAFSA, request state/school grants and scholarships, and review any remaining gap. Borrowing is optional. Check each program's rules about combining awards and tuition coverage before accepting funding.
